Duke of Edinburgh Update
Dear Parent / Carer.
I hope this email finds you well and you are taking the right steps to socially distance yourself from others.
I just wanted to confirm the plan for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award this year. With the continued updates and advice from the government the school has no other option but to cancel our expeditions at this time. I fully support this decision and have contacted the expedition provider to confirm. I am sure this will leave yourself and our young participants with questions. I will do my best to answer a few of those now.
Q: When will the expedition go ahead?
A: As soon as we are able to run expeditions, we will let you know. In the meantime and to provide a level of certainty I am currently looking beyond September. However if the situation changes and things improve I will look at going ahead sooner.
Q: What if my Child/Ward can’t make the next set of dates?
A: We have a robust team and are very flexible. We will run expeditions with single groups if we have to in order to provide every student with the opportunity. But I would ask you to try make the dates when they are released.
Q: Can we do anything to help with DofE at this time?
A: Yes absolutely. Every section of the participants award will be effected. This current guidance means no one should make social contact that is unnecessary. So I ask you not to send your participants to do their Skill, Physical or volunteering at this time. Instead I want you to encourage them to do this at home and indoors where possible. They may need a little help in gathering evidence of what they have been doing. If you could help with this also, that would be great.
I have produced an info-graphic to guide you on this process and an evidence pack so you can verify the time commitment.
Q: What if they have started the activity and now cant attend.
A: If possible they should continue at home and gather the evidence. I will then take over as the assessor and sign of the section after I have looked at the evidence.
If is it not possible for them to continue at home then they should choose a different activity for the remainder of the time for that section. For example, they are in week 10 of a 12 week programme then they should do the new activity for two weeks only.
I know this will be incredibly frustrating for all involved, but please be assured the school will deliver on its promise to provide the award to your child/ ward and in a timely manner. I would encourage you to keep in contact and ask any questions you may have. My school email is
